China has confirmed that it has been negotiating with the United States on the repatriation of several economic crimes suspects. One of them is Yang Xiuzhu, who is on top of a list of 100 economic fugitives released by the Chinese government and Interpol. Yang is currently seeking asylum from the US government. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hong Lei says the ongoing negotiation is part of the joint investigation from the two countries that launched in 2014. "We appreciate and praise the support and cooperation from the US in this joint effort. We hope the two sides will continue to give full play to the China-U.S. Joint Liaison Group on Law Enforcement Cooperation as a main channel, and promote anti-corruption cooperation with a more pragmatic and flexible attitude." Hong adds the joint investigation had made significant progress. Two out of the five suspects currently being sought have already been returned to China. |
